- Taking gun dog training to the next level -
I have been training dogs for the last 8+ years. I started training with a very well known dog trainer, Craig Johnson (CJ's K-9 Retreat) here in my town of New Richmond, Wisconsin. I take great passion in watching the dogs I train make progress from puppy to mature hunter. I personally have two labs, Chaos (pictured above) is our 2 year old purebred Red lab who has been trained from 3 months to be my bird dog and loves pheasant hunting locally around Wisconsin. Chaos started gun training at 5 months and flushed a pheasant his first run out, opening morning. Rebel, the newer of our two is a 3 month old purebred British lab and is in the process of being well on her way to being a very well trained waterfowl hunter. They are both avid swimmers and love every chance to get outdoors.
Our dogs get trained on a daily/every weekend basis both with at home training and water training every chance we get. I start each dog with a training dummy scented with pheasant while doing at home training so they know what to smell, focus on and search for. During the winter when the water isn't available, we go and walk the fields to learn how to flush birds and get them familiar with the different scents and sounds the woods offer. They learn how to maintain focus even with the distraction of their surroundings. Watching the dogs work the fields with their nose to the ground and see how excited they get when they catch on to what they are supposed to be doing is one of the top reasons I enjoy doing this so much.
When I am not training our dogs, which is rare, I spend my free time with my wife and our four kids. One of my favorite things about training dogs is that you can train them to respond to anyone. Our dogs have the discipline to follow commands whether they are coming from myself, my wife or any of our kids - all of which range from 7 to 16. One of the most important things I learned while doing early training is making sure that you are consistently using the same commands repeatedly so your dog knows what to expect. Our dogs are trained on "here, off, sit, stay, leave, wait and free" these are all pertinent when training for hunting so they know exactly what you expect from them. Dogs are incredibly intelligent and it is one of my great joys to watch how fast they catch on to different commands.
